Why slot games are borrowing more from video game progression systems

From League of Legends augments to cascading reels and evolving multipliers, progression mechanics are giving players much more to follow

League of Legends players spend a lot of time thinking about what happens next.

Finishing an item can change a matchup. A champion can hit a level that unlocks a major power spike. Stacks accumulate, objectives alter priorities, and a build that looked strange ten minutes ago can suddenly make perfect sense.

Riot has pushed progression further in some of League's alternative modes. Arena's 2026 update introduced Augment Levels, where augments can have up to three levels, and some gain an additional Keystone effect when maxed out. Riot also introduced ways to replace or upgrade existing augments, adding another decision to how a build develops during a match.

That idea – giving players something that develops during play – has become increasingly interesting in slot design too. The basic reels remain familiar, but the systems surrounding them can be surprisingly intricate.

Progression gives players something to follow

Progression doesn't have to mean completing a traditional level and moving onto the next one.

In League, it can happen constantly. Gold moves a player closer to an item. Experience moves a champion toward another level. Stacks increase the effect of certain abilities, while augments can alter how an entire build works.

ARAM: Mayhem offers a particularly clear example. Riot added 45 new augments in a February 2026 update, alongside Augment Sets and a progression track. Certain related augments can form sets, creating additional interactions for players to discover.

Slot progression works differently because outcomes are determined by the game's underlying mathematics and randomization. The interesting design question is what happens around those outcomes.

Slot mechanics are becoming increasingly layered

Look through new slots games, and you may find that the reels are only the first layer of what is happening. A game might combine cascading symbols with an escalating multiplier, then change the behavior of that multiplier when a feature round begins. Another might use expanding grids, persistent symbols, or meters that build toward a separate feature. This makes exploring new slots games partly about understanding how individual mechanics interact. Two slots can both use cascading reels and still behave very differently because the cascade may feed into another system.

The cascade itself is fairly simple. A winning combination disappears, and new symbols fall into the empty positions. If another winning combination forms, another cascade can occur within the same game cycle.

The intricacy comes from what developers attach to that sequence.

A multiplier could increase after each successful cascade and reset once the sequence ends. In another design, the multiplier might persist during a bonus feature. A grid could expand after certain conditions are met, giving subsequent cascades additional positions to fill. Persistent symbols can remain in place while everything around them changes.

Suddenly, one spin can contain several states, rather than one immediate result.

How progression works across the two formats

The systems serve very different types of games, but both show how developers can layer progression onto an established foundation.

The important part is the interaction between different systems. A cascading slot on its own is one type of mechanic. A cascade that increases a multiplier, expands a grid, and moves the game closer to another feature creates several things for the player to follow simultaneously.

Bonus rounds can introduce another set of rules

Feature rounds give slot designers even more space for intricate mechanics.

The base game may establish a system, and the bonus round can modify it. Multipliers might begin at a different value, symbols could remain persistent between spins, or an additional feature may become available after reaching a particular point.

Some games use collection mechanics instead. Specific symbols contribute toward a meter or objective, creating visible progress alongside the individual spin results. Others use several bonus stages, where reaching one state changes the possible features available in the next.

This is where modern slot design can become far deeper than the appearance of the reels suggests. Players may be following the current symbol layout, a multiplier, persistent positions, and progress toward a feature at the same time.

Familiar mechanics can create completely different games

Cascades, multipliers, and expanding grids are familiar features by now, but seeing one on a game's feature list doesn't tell you much about how it will actually play.

A cascade multiplier might reset immediately or keep climbing. An expanded grid could stick around for a sequence or shrink back after a single spin. Sticky symbols could stay put for several spins, disappear after a feature, or interact with another mechanic entirely.

League players will know how much those smaller details matter. Two champions can play the same lane, chase the same objectives, and still require a completely different approach.

And that's really where things get interesting. Once cascades start feeding multipliers, grids begin changing, and features affect one another, there's a lot happening behind those spinning reels.
